Check out what's happening at the Greenville County Medical Society Alliance
The Greenville County Medical Society Alliance (GCMSA) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of physician spouses who work together to promote community health projects, education and initiatives through volunteer and financial support.
In May of 1922, twenty-six doctors’ wives from eleven states met in St. Louis. They recognized that a national organization was needed to “extend the aims of the medical profession through the wives of doctors to the various women’s organizations which look to the advancement in health and education, to assist in entertainment at all medical conventions, and to promote acquaintainceship among doctors’ families so that close fellowship may exist.”
This organization became the American Medical Association Alliance, which is now the largest volunteer arm of the American Medical Association. Comprised of physicians’ spouses, the Alliance is dedicated to promoting better health, ensuring sound health legislation, and raising funds for medical education. Since 1922, the Alliance has worked diligently to further the aims of the American Medical Association through community programs, projects, and services. Our Greenville County chapter is the largest in South Carolina and was founded in 1927.
Yesterday, the AMA Alliance was a small group of dedicated women. Today, we have grown into a nationwide volunteer organization. We are now a diverse group of physician spouses who have the common goal of improving the health and medical care of all. We are dedicated to the advancement of medicine and to the promotion of public health through financial and volunteer support of community health projects and health education.
The GCMSA welcomes eligible Upstate South Carolina physicians and physicians’ spouses to join our organization. This includes any physician or physician-in-training who is eligible for membership in the Greenville County Medical Society, their spouse or divorced spouse, or their widow or widower (provided that the person has not remarried outside of the medical profession).
The GCMSA understands the unique challenges that accompany life in a medical family. Alliance members from all over the Upstate gather for meetings to build lifelong friendships and offer support. You make valuable connections with Alliance members of different ages, ethnicities, religions and opinions. The Alliance has opportunities to enhance your leadership skills and nourish your personal growth. And all our fundraisers and events support charities with programs that support the health and wellness of our community.
WHAT DO YOU GET FOR YOUR MEMBERSHIP?
Our membership year runs June through May, with meetings usually monthly from September to May. Digital newsletters are sent monthly at a minimum, with an occasional newsletter mailing. Our annual yearbook is mailed in the fall with a listing of all meetings, programs and events (subject to change), as well as a Directory that includes all members and their contact information. Regular County membership is $35 per year.
We also encourage our members to join the South Carolina Medical Association Alliance (SCMAA). This additional $35 State membership is very important in helping to show support for our physicians with South Carolina legislators. Join other Alliance members throughout the state who strive to protect the future of medicine through legislative advocacy. In fact, the Alliance often speaks louder and clearer to legislators than our busy spouses!
