2022 #MAKETHECUT proceeds will benefit:
YMCA Food Relief Program for Veterans
YMCA of Greenville began efforts to help relieve local food insecurity in 2020 when schools closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Food Relief Program has since grown from providing bags of food for 30 families to now over 200 a week. The program is staffed by volunteers, funded by grants and donations, and delivers food to families in hotels, homeless veterans at the VA Outpatient Center, residents at the Gateway House, and other families identified through Greenville County Schools, Upstate Warrior Solution, and Alston Wilkes Society.

#MAKETHECUT is the ingenious fundraising campaign created by former GCMSA President Erica Kelly. The concept is simple, hold a social media fundraiser to raise at least $5,000, at the end of which you promise to drastically chop your long hair. But it gets even better… there’s no overhead like with an in-person event, so every dollar raised goes directly to charity! And since the campaign is virtual, it can’t be canceled or rescheduled due to community health concerns.

This year the very worthy beneficiary is local military veterans! The GCMSA is partnering with the YMCA Food Relief Program to help provide weekly food boxes to 60 military veterans and their families. The campaign will begin on Labor Day and will culminate with current GCMSA President Donna Frazier chopping her long locks at the November General Membership meeting in honor of Veterans Day.
This time around, we’re also adding some twists!
